Yeah if I remember it was Iranian tomahawks that caused it.

(Edit: I am merely relaying what they said, not that I in anyway subscribe to it)

I remember that too. Initially they tried to go the "Iran caused this". Then the analysis quickly showed that it were US weapons. Suddenly the "Iran caused this" narrative disappeared. There are professional liars in media. Their job is to lie and obfuscate.

The US even said it was Iran who did it. The US has literally become the least trustworthy nation in the world by lying about everything, threatening to go to war against allies for no other reason than wanting the land...

          Overstated.

It was never given as a fact.

Was literally "in my opinion" speculation. A dumb opinion? Okay. But not statement of fact.

This has very little value when everything gets prefaced with "in my opinion". Government officials should be held to a higher standard when it comes to releasing these types of statements.

Well, if the map image I saw initially after the bombing was correct, then the facility did not used to be a school. The building had different, military purposes as it was attached to a military base, and later was converted into a school. My understanding is that the AI that was used to facilitate this attack was trained on maps where the building was still used for military purposes some years back.

It absolutely does not excuse anything, but I suppose that might explain the denial at first. I cannot explain any further denial though.

        1. alistairSH · · focus · HN ↗

Trump claimed it was an accident. Then again he seems to be similar to Putin: both lie almost all of the time.

Edit: Actually, others pointed out that at first the narrative was that Iran did it. That's indeed true that the media used that; perhaps one can even build up a timestamp of media reporting falseness here. I forgot which media reported the above lie first.

Colloquially, I think it is well accepted that US launched the missiles. The question is whether they indiscriminately targeted civilians.

NYT did an excellent analysis showing that the US probably did intentionally target the building, believing it to be part of the nearby compound that received several direct strikes. This analysis is really good [1]

The definition of war crime is not "Killed civilians" it is "targeted civilians" or "reckless indiscriminate attacks". My understanding of the NYT analysis is that this was very plausibly misunderstood to still be part of the iran national guard compound.

Everyone gets their own opinion on this. There were 900 or so strikes in the first 12h, and only one school hit, and that school was actually part of the compound before. A horrific accident that was brought on by unnecessary hostilities, i think.

      1: <a href="https:&#x2F;&#x2F;www.nytimes.com&#x2F;2026&#x2F;03&#x2F;11&#x2F;us&#x2F;politics&#x2F;iran-school-missile-strike.html" rel="nofollow">https:&#x2F;&#x2F;www.nytimes.com&#x2F;2026&#x2F;03&#x2F;11&#x2F;us&#x2F;politics&#x2F;iran-school-m...

      1. jvanderbot · · focus · HN ↗
I&#x27;ll add the definition from the Rome statute that, by my read, establishes a war crime when there is intent to commit the civilian strikes:

Unless otherwise provided, a person shall be criminally responsible and liable for punishment for a crime within the jurisdiction of the Court only if the material elements are committed with intent and knowledge.

A mistake of fact shall be a ground for excluding criminal responsibility only if it negates the mental element required by the crime.

Still this is a legal defense that might plausibly be used during a trial, not necessarily a reason to skip a trial.
        1. toast0 · · focus · HN ↗
From that text, it sure sounds to me that these attacks are going to be legal. The article describes them as &#x27;indescriminate&#x27;, but they were specifically targetted based on a mistake of fake.

There&#x27;s certainly evidence that the US was neglegent in relying on old information without verifying. That&#x27;s serious and reprehensible, but I don&#x27;t know that that rises to the level of a war crime.

      2. paulddraper · · focus · HN ↗
        To recap:

A Iranian military structure was converted into a school.

After conversion, the rest of the naval base remained there (&lt; 100m away).

Missile strikes hit both the base and the adjacent school.

        ---

FYI, it&#x27;s not unusual for schools to be part of military bases. The U.S. itself operates over a 100. [1]

Maybe if the schools was built recently there&#x27;d be a case. That&#x27;s not the case, its as converted a full decade ago. We just didn&#x27;t bother updating our maps and intel before launching missiles.

You should feel angry, and you should be channeling that anger into constructive action.

For now, this means voting Democrat and supporting Democrats for office.

Donald Trump has turned the Republican party into a cult of personality to support a kleptocracy. The GOP is no longer the party of conservative values. The rule of law, respect for traditional mores or institutions, and personal integrity have all been defenestrated by the Trump administration.

Are the Democrats perfect? Of course not. But under the current system, the United States has a zero-sum two party system, and this means voting for one of the two parties. Making room for third parties means adjusting the rules (eg. ranked choice voting, or other). These ideas are worth pursuing. As long as we&#x27;re stuck in a two party system, this means voting for the lesser of two evils.

Nihilists will scoff at this and point to everything wrong that happened under Obama or Biden. They&#x27;ll says Democrats are no better than Republicans. They&#x27;re wrong. At best, they&#x27;re misguided. At worst, they&#x27;re actually trying to bring an end to democratic government (that&#x27;s a lower-case &quot;d&quot; for democracy).

The Democrats are imperfect. The Republican party under the current leadership are far, far worse. It&#x27;s not even close.

      Get out and vote.

    While vacationing in Colorado I was approached by a young man and woman who wanted to tell me about Christianity, towards the end I told them that I do no view Christians in America as good people as group, and gave them various reasons why, the support of Trump being a main reason. Supporting someone so overtly evil while pretending to be righteous and godly was clearly contradictory to me, the whole situation caused me to view religious people not as misinformed but actively disingenuous (those smart enough to know better anyway). He snapped back with &quot;OBAMA BOMBED A SCHOOL&quot;

If so many Christians were so easily swayed by hateful propaganda then that&#x27;s still a fault and failure of the religion. I was in support of the airstrikes in Iran. The Iranian government was gunning down civilians in the streets, in some cases guiding protestors into killzones where they were all slaughtered, leaving the streets saturated in blood. Innocent peoples bodies were then ransomed off to &quot;pay for the bullet that shot them&quot;. Some of the people in body bags weren&#x27;t even dead, just stuffed into a bag and assumed dead, because emergency care would be antithetical to their goals.

Iran decided that their own domestic repressive force was insufficient and perhaps too empathetic, so they brought in foreigners (Iraqi Shias AFAICT) to repressive the people on their behalf.

THAT was what had truly upset me - people who wanted a freer better life being brutalized for daring to stand up to authorities. As you put it, it was genuinely intently upsetting and unacceptable to me.

I don&#x27;t mean to demean the death of innocents at the US military&#x27;s hands. But painting the whole effort as an evil atrocity (what I believe the point of the article), belies the atrocities that triggered the effort.

As seen with this current US president, there&#x27;re always ways to grab more power, directly or indirectly, no matter what checks are in place. And there are certain things that a president has to be allowed in some way for them to be able to act as a president in the first place, which preempts making them fully off limits.

Yes, the definition of war crime is not &quot;intentionally targeted building&quot; it is &quot;intentionally targeted building that it knew was non-military and full of civilians&quot;. If you plausibly believed it to be a military target, then it&#x27;s plausibly not a war crime.

They were &quot;completely clear on OPSEC&quot;, with a left-leaning Atlantic reporter in the signal group chat. This bombing also coalesced support in Iran and had a big rally around the flag effect. Data in Iran is hard and the timetable was extremely fast, again, due to incompetence and the inability to constrain a vassal. So its appalling to say, but a bunch of morons with LLMS and outdated targeting, pushed to meet the objectives of corrupt idiots is almost certainly the cause. I personally consider it a war crime, but I am not sure if it meets the legal definition.

What is there to take seriously regarding this strike other than the facts as presented?

There were 900 strikes in 12h, and only one target involved a strike on a school, and huge coincidence that target was a dozen meters from a military compound and was in fact part of that military compound not long ago.

It&#x27;s quite easy to accept that this was a horrific mistake. Whether you agree with the idea of striking Iran at all is up to you, but once they &quot;went hot&quot;, precision strikes on military targets were successful in 900 cases, and it&#x27;s plausible that one precision strike was issued incorrectly.

It doesn&#x27;t bring back the kiddos. It also doesn&#x27;t mean it&#x27;s a war crime. It&#x27;s right to be angry about that strike or even the larger war if you oppose it, but spurious legal justifications for outrage aren&#x27;t required - it can be wrong even when legally justified or plausibly just a mistake.

&gt; The UN mission concluded that the strike on Shajareh Tayyebeh primary school constituted an indiscriminate attack causing civilian deaths and damage to civilian infrastructure, amounting to a war crime under international law.

&gt; According to the report, the US relied on intelligence suggesting a senior Iranian military commander was present at the site but failed to adequately verify the information before launching the strike.

&gt; Investigators said the failure to update targeting intelligence and confirm the building was a military objective amounted to more than mere negligence.

&gt; “Rather, the US directed the strikes at the building of the school while being aware of a substantial risk of striking a civilian object and acting recklessly as regards the possibility that this would happen.”

Unless otherwise provided, a person shall be criminally responsible and liable for punishment for a crime within the jurisdiction of the Court only if the material elements are committed with intent and knowledge.

A mistake of fact shall be a ground for excluding criminal responsibility only if it negates the mental element required by the crime.

... (rome statute on it), meaning that they had to know that civilians were there or that their actions would cause undue risk of civilian deaths. That&#x27;s more than just &quot;maybe&quot;.

The double tap to me is really what is cruel. I understand americans don&#x27;t want to hear it, because they need to believe their military is moral, but a double tap to me show cruelty and willingness to target doctor, nurses, firemen and any person courageous enough to help.

The US military and its sailors already showed me everything i wont to know about them when i saw the report on them shooting torpedoes at capsized boats.

        1. jvanderbot · · focus · HN ↗
What is it about &quot;double tap&quot; that is particularly cruel? I think we&#x27;re forming a narrative here that doesn&#x27;t make sense.

It took 12h or so to conclude 900 or so attacks. That implies many different delays between hits. Everything I read said it was maybe a couple minutes between hits, pretty typical for bombing.

What is the intent being inferred here?

          1. mahboi · · focus · HN ↗
Is there some other purpose of a double tap besides killing first responders? Maybe to hit underground targets?
            1. jvanderbot · · focus · HN ↗
reverse question: Why does everyone assume that only one missile is justified per target? I think this line of reasoning came out of the &quot;double tap&quot; strikes used in Gaza where a five to 30m wait allowed a crowd to gather.

What was the time between hits in this case?

              1. mahboi · · focus · HN ↗
Because the first missile kills the intended targets. What&#x27;s the second one for, killing people picking up bodies?
                1. AnimalMuppet · · focus · HN ↗
Does the first missile kill the targets? Do the launchers know, for sure, before they launch the second?

Or are they launching two for redundancy, like often happens in military situations? Planes and missiles can break down or get shot down. If you want the target destroyed, you send more than one.

                  1. mahboi · · focus · HN ↗
Actually, I agree about the timing. If you&#x27;re right that it was only a few minutes between attacks, they were probably not targeting first responders, they were after the initial targets.

The double-tap strategy in general is different when they wait longer. Whoever they didn&#x27;t kill got away, so whoever is moving there at that point is probably a paramedic. Which you mentioned was happening in Gaza.

                2. jvanderbot · · focus · HN ↗
That is the colloquial definition of a double tap.

That is not automatically the case whenever two missiles strike a target.

The &quot;follow up&quot; hit requires a delay. The delay is not accidental - you want to give time for a crowd to gather.

All targets in the area received &gt;= 1 missile, and all somewhat close together, from the NYT analysis.

All of these facts are outlined in US&#x27; own internal investigation and in the UN&#x27;s fact-finding mission.

That’s not a contradiction, since missiles are one of the weapon types carried by aircraft. Unless you mean it was literally hit by aircraft in a sense that aircraft were flown into the building.

The first strike heavily damaged the building. Teachers and surviving students rushed to a prayer hall for protection but about 40 minutes after the first strike, a US airstrike hit again and killed all survivors.

A double-tap strike is often legal basis for war crimes already as the primary purpose is to hit first responders and avoid any survivors being saved.

Yeah, the whole thing is based on armchair assessments to begin with.

                  1) I dont think all the involved military leaders are such cartoon villians that they would intentionally strike a school full of kids

                  2) I especially dont think they would do so with the intent of a follow up strike exclusively for killing the first responders to the atrocity from (1)

Delivering two bombs to a military target doesn&#x27;t seem unreasonable. The fact that two missiles struck the school is not evidence of (1) OR (2). If there were significant intentional delay, that would change my assessment. There doesn&#x27;t seem to be, in this case.

        &gt; &quot;intentionally targeted building that it knew was non-military and full of civilians&quot;

That formulation guarantees that most war crimes won&#x27;t be revealed as such. The militaries of the world are operating under top secrecy about what they know, knew or plan on knowing, ditto for their intent. They can claim whatever they please without regard to actual reality, proof is impossible to obtain.

Thus, under this formulation, war crimes are doubly guarded by the secrecy of two kinds of information available only to the perpetrators and protected by harsh laws again any leaks.

Assange knows, he dealt with it but I doubt he or anyone else will try to break the secrecy again given the zeal of his prosecution. To think that what he revealed was an isolated case is laughable.

&gt;An Analyst’s Missed Remark Surfaced in Deadly Iran School Strike Probe

&gt;An analyst&#x27;s missed remarks and US intelligence systems that weren’t connected to one another are among the missteps that investigators have surfaced while probing the cause of a missile strike on an Iranian school that killed an estimated 120 children, people familiar with the matter said.

&gt;Years before the US attacked Iran at the end of February, an intelligence analyst examining information about potential future strike targets in Iran noticed changes at a site the US had previously characterized as a naval facility belonging to the elite wing of the Iranian military in Minab city in the southeast of the country. It was, in fact, now an elementary school.

&gt;The analyst remarked on changes at the site in a digital intelligence tool, but that tool wasn’t linked up to the official intelligence database that the US uses to develop strike targets and the information was never conveyed to military commanders, according to people familiar with the matter who declined to be named discussing sensitive matters.

They use that to “legitimately” target villages, hospitals and schools.

These are crimes. The point of defining war crimes is to compel state not to take “opportunities” at the cost of innocent lives. It’s never okay.

I wouldn’t say sadistic, but the military command is very desensitized to death. When all you do is basically kill people, then killing more is like pouring a cup of coffee. It’s just part of your day.

Remember that, prior to this, the US military had been conducting many suspicious strikes on boats in the gulf. It’s not like this came out of nowhere. The culture of negligence and lack of care was well-established.

The US military has been murdering fishermen off the coast of South America this year, after firing on the boats, disabling them they were shown no quarter and kill shot orders were given AND EXECUTED. Those are WAR CRIMES. The US military has done war crimes alongside the IDF over during this current year in Iran. Furthermore, the President of The United States has publicly stated he will destroy the Iranian civilization. He has ordered new very large bombs be built to Drop on Iran. Do you care to acknowledge these facts?

Unfortunately there&#x27;s a very large, compelling body of evidence of the US military routinely killing civilians with double tap.

        Intentionally.

This is not a negligence, this is a strategy because they get off scot free.

Nothing in the UN report claims that this was an intentional strike on civilians. They make NO claim to that effect.

The claim is that &quot;the U.S. failed in its obligation to do everything feasible to verify that it was a military objective. Updating targeting information and acting upon such information falls within the category of feasible precautions an attacking party is required to take under IHL . . . the strikes are a violation of the obligation to distinguish between civilian objects.

      And:

      &quot; the Mission concluded that when targeting the school building, the U.S acted wilfully, that is with the requisite mental element of recklessness ( dolus eventualis).&quot;

      And (finally):

      &quot;. . . the Mission found that these strikes constituted an indiscriminate attack in violation of the principle of distinction.&quot;

The UN report&#x27;s claim is that the US negligently used outdated information which led them to think this compound hit was still a military target.

&gt; At least 165 people, mostly schoolgirls, were killed. One official cited by The New York Times said, “We are still looking into the strike, but the evidence increasingly points to US aircraft as the source of the school being hit.” US authorities have acknowledged the inquiry but have not officially claimed responsibility.

                Any ways I think it&#x27;s a little obfuscated because the initial wave of airstrikes started at 11:22am and there were 9 in total, several hitting near the school and at least 2 hitting the school directly. All of this happened in less than 2 minutes according to a joint investigation by Sky News and Forensic Architecture.[0] I think that&#x27;s also the source of the confusion of whether this was a &quot;triple tap&quot; or &quot;double tap&quot;

I&#x27;m still thinking it&#x27;s not after families or first responders arrived, because the death toll would&#x27;ve included more than children and teachers.

It was not a double, triple or whatever number &quot;tap&quot;. That&#x27;s literal IRGC propaganda commonly parroted by all of their proxies in the region, irrespective of what actually happened. By now, nobody believes this narrative because of how over-used a lie it has become. (It&#x27;s their equivalent of the westerners calling every freedom fighter a &quot;terrorist&quot;.)

There are two scenarios, one of which is a &quot;double tap&quot; and one which is not:

      1) There are &#x27;n&#x27; targets. The targets get hit in rapid succession, one bomb each. &lt;- normal bombing

      2) There is 1 target. It is hit once. There is a long delay, long enough for first responders to show up. The same 1 target is hit again. &lt;- THIS is a double tap.

The IRGC base had multiple buildings. Each building was hit once. That&#x27;s not what most people would call a double-tap.

Some people ran from one building to another and were hit twice. That&#x27;s just... bad luck.

The real crime committed by US forces is that they didn&#x27;t care to update and review their targeting information, resulting in totally unnecessary civilian deaths. Their hubris, their pride, their unfounded confidence in their own superiority resulted in a shameful atrocity.

      That&#x27;s bad enough.

  19. mainecoder · · focus · HN ↗
First of all when a missile is launched there are procedures in place in every modern military to verify targeting and also procedures in place to hamper rogue commanders of giving strike orders. The timing is also interesting the missile was launched when school was in session, the targeting was decided like any modern military by a dedicated targeting team and the decision to strike was given by providing launch codes( launch codes are not used only for Nuclear Weapons). To say the targeting was automatically done by an AI or the launch decision was made by an AI is totally false at the present moment the military workflow is to0 bespoke and unique to be able to integrate AI so seemlessly, carelessly and in such a manner. Please examine what kind of workflows a modern military has and you will be bound to choose between two options 1. The procedures in place are arbitrary and inaccurate or 2. The targeting and launch was deliberate weighing the political cost and providing alibis.

One great thing about the Internet is it lets you see how other people live, if you want to go looking for it. Think about all the things you want in your life: a house to live in, a car to drive, children (maybe), your children being able to get an education safely, good health, time with family and friends and so on.

The point is that Iranian families want all of those things too. Because they&#x27;re people just like you are. You can see videos of ordinary Iranians going to the market, going to work, having family over, eating a meal together and so on. It saddens and frightens me how easy it seems to dehumanize other people and basically be OK with killing them en masse.

Now I want you to think about what you&#x27;d do if you sent your 11 year old daughter to school one day and some foreign government double tapped that school with 2 Tomahawk missiles killing almost 200 people, most of them children.

We kind of do know because it&#x27;s basically what happened after 9&#x2F;11. We spent $8T+ on a 20 year war to kill over a million people in vengeance that really didn&#x27;t do anything else. Remember that Afghanistan offered to hand bin Laden over after 9&#x2F;11 [1].

The Trump administration tried (badly) lying about what happened. First it never happened. Second, it wasn&#x27;t us. But nobody else has Tomahawk missiles so that was never going to work.

The only question is where the targeting information came from and what verification was done. I am not convinced that Israel didn&#x27;t supply this information so the US military would commit atrocities to keep them in a war that Israel had desperately wanted for decades. Every president since Reagan had been begged by Israeli PMs to invade Iran. All of them refused. It&#x27;s widely believed that Netanyahu threatened to use nukes if Obama wouldn&#x27;t do it. Obama called his bluff. Until Trump. And here we are.

I agree that we shouldn&#x27;t be in this war, but that doesn&#x27;t make everything a war crime.

It&#x27;s a war of aggression. That is a war crime.

Iraq was also a war crime.

The reason Putin is a war criminal is because of his unprovoked attack of Ukraine.

This was a stupid war to get into and it’s been prosecuted embarrassingly poorly, but Iran has been sponsoring terrorist groups all over the world for decades. They’re not some innocent country going about their business who was suddenly attacked unprovoked.

&gt; but Iran has been sponsoring terrorist groups all over the world for decades.

Let&#x27;s say I grant this. The problem you run into is these terrorist groups have not attacked the US. The last time Iran did anything aggressive towards the US was in the 1980s.

In fact, Iran has aided the US in going after common enemies like ISIS&#x2F;ISIL and Al-Qaeda.

The terrorist groups supported by Iran have primarily been groups fighting Israel, not the US. That&#x27;s what makes it particularly unprovoked.

In fact, the US has a stronger argument to attack Saudi Arabia than it does Iran because they actually have funded terrorists that directly attacked the US. Heck, you could argue that the US is justified in directly attacking Russia with this sort of argument.

Last time wasn&#x27;t 1980s. 2024 was the Iran-Israel war, but US was involved too. Iranian proxies attacked US troops then. Iran itself attacked US forces in 2020 after the US killed general Soleimani, after years of Iran&#x27;s proxies attacking US troops in Iraq etc. It goes back and forth, and I&#x27;m sure the bottom of it was the US being involved in the Mid East for no good reason (the reason was Israel&#x2F;AIPAC), but this didn&#x27;t start in 2026.

Even the Russian invasion of Ukraine wasn&#x27;t unprovoked. Yeah Ukraine didn&#x27;t attack Russia, but they did try to join NATO, then after Germany blocked that, the US was getting involved there in more covert ways. Ukraine overturned pro-Russia Yanukovych&#x27;s presidential election in &#x27;04 which saw meddling from both Russia and US, then he reran and won in &#x27;10, then Ukrainian protestors removed him in &#x27;14.

It actually hasn&#x27;t &quot;gone back and forth&quot;. That&#x27;s the issue. What you have is 2 good examples of Iran being attacked, unprovoked, and then responding to the attack and STILL after those attacks trying to establish peace negotiations.

For the 2024 conflict I see no indicator that US troops were involved, other than providing defensive support for Israel. Iran didn&#x27;t target the US even as it was shooting down their missiles and drones.

There have been 20 years of Iranian proxies attacking US forces, mostly after the Iraq War and during the Syrian Civil War.

&gt; 2024 Hezbollah killed US troops in Jordan

Nope. It was a proxy of Hezbollah who Hamas, Iran, and Hezbollah all condemned. And after the US attacked Iran in retaliation, they again de-escalated.

&gt; Houthis also attacked US ships if you count that.

This is probably the best example of the point you are making. It was because of Israel&#x27;s actions in Gaza, but yes, this is a case of an Iranian proxy attacking US ships.

Look, I&#x27;m not saying Iran is great or their government good. But I am saying they have been pretty level headed towards the US for quite some time. The main reason the US comes into any sort of conflict with them is Israel and Israeli aggression in the region.

                    2. senordevnyc · · focus · HN ↗
For better or worse, Israel is our ally, and countries go to war on behalf of their allies being attacked.

And yes, the US has a valid argument for attacking Saudi Arabia for funding terrorists that have attacked the US. That they have not does not in any way bolster your argument.

Sorry, there’s just no rational argument for the idea that the US attacking Iran was an unprovoked war of aggression and thus a war crime.

        &quot;Secretary of War&quot; Pete Hegseth has literally stated that war crimes are now American military policy. Not that they were really off the table for the US to begin with, but we&#x27;re no longer even pretending to care about the rules, because rules are for soyboy virgin cucks and our warfighters are warmaxxing Spartan chads. &quot;Maximum lethality, not tepid legality.&quot;

We should assume it was intentional.

These are baseless and misleading accusations. In WWII many tens of thousands of civilians died because of erroneous bombings and no one ever got accused of &quot;war crimes&quot; over them.

In a war mistakes are made and people will die as a result. But that doesn&#x27;t mean they&#x27;re war crimes. Blaming the U.S. whilst leaving Iran alone, which blatantly attacks civilian infrastructure, makes the U.N. look biased and nefarious.

It&#x27;s plain wrong to accuse U.S. forces of war crimes over this. You could say it was negligent of them to use old maps of the military base, but that&#x27;s not a war crime.

IIRC the guy who blew up his Tesla truck (in front of Trump Tower) was a drone pilot involved in this (or a similar) mass-casualty bombing. Perhaps he was leadership – but the released parts of his manifesto... were revealing about his opinion on US-motives.

Their families should receive an apology and compensation if it can be done covertly with a neutral third party I suppose. Even if it take decades. One day.

For now I can only process it better knowing that The Red Cross Society of China allocated $200,000 to the Iranian Red Crescent Society specifically as special funds for the bereaved parents who can apply for it. Each family basically receive about an entire year of earnings, which isn&#x27;t much but at least it is something to help cover funeral costs.
