Imagine how big Apple would/could be if they embraced open hardware. They do have a moat here. macOS is so bloated, I hate it, but the hardware is just so much better than anything else.
Nuvia started because a few Apple engineers wanted to make server CPUs and sell them. Apple management didn’t want to do it so they left and started their own company. They were acquired by Qualcomm.

At the very least they ought to consider doing a macOS-based server chip. Given how many providers are racking Mac Minis these days. It's mostly for CI testing for code deployed to Apple platforms, so it very much supports their business.
