Remember when your parents scolded you and told you later that it was for your own good, and you couldn't make sense of it, and thought your parents hated you and did not care for you, and want you gone?

      > sought out expert guidance to set things right.

In the movie the expert that "Camacho" selected was also agreeable to the viewers. What if it was not?

Isn’t town hall a thing in the US? I’m not american, but voting on the scale of a nation is generally costly, and some country just keep it for a few important matters. Delegates are way more pragmatic.
          2. thelaxiankey · · focus · HN ↗
Don't know about you, but personally I don't like direct democracy bc i have shit to do besides deciding which law to pass. My states' ballot is full of ridiculous questions every year and takes me days to do my research. I can't imagine doing this year round without getting paid.
            1. lolakutty · · focus · HN ↗
              > i have shit to do besides deciding which law to pass...

Really shows people take the government for granted. Just remember about the people who gave their lives for freedom and independence. They gave their LIFE. You are only asked to give some of your time to maintain what they bought.

Or am I getting this all wrong and people never gave life for freedom and independence?

              1. jayGlow · · focus · HN ↗
there is a lot of nuance in laws so much so that people spend their entire lives studying and learning how to work with the law. it's unrealistic for every person in a democracy to be able to study understand and vote accordingly on every law proposed. people absolutely should put in more effort towards their civic duty but there are other aspects of society that require significant effort as well.
              2. thelaxiankey · · focus · HN ↗
People gave their lives so everyone could spend their life studying law?? The people you've got in mind gave their lives for a representative, not a direct democracy.

Laws are difficult and nuanced. Deciding between yes/no takes me a long time, because I am not a lawyer or a legislator. Even for them, again, legislating is a job for a reason... I know I like certain things, and dislike others, I know basically which direction I want things to go; however, deciding whether a concrete bill is a reasonable-enough implementation that has closed loopholes is way out of the scope of decisions I would trust myself, or most citizens, to make well. This, it feels like a waste.

          3. tancop · · focus · HN ↗
Voting on policy directly would be taking up everyones time. It's just not practical for anything bigger than a small village.

The problem with today's system is we have MPs or representatives instead of delegates. They are not bound to their campaign promises in any way other than risking a small fine if someone fights them in court for months to prove they were lying. Once you get elected you can do what you want until the next election unless you really piss off your colleagues and get kicked out.

Voters should be able to call an early election in their district and override their reps/force them to vote a certain way, without having to personally show up and decide every single issue.

          4. InsideOutSanta · · focus · HN ↗
            > If we didn't need hand-holding we'd just vote on policy directly.

That argument doesn't make sense to me. We elect people to work for us. They're not our parents; they're our employees. You have the relationship upside-down.

None of this has anything to do with voting on policies.

        4. OrderlyTiamat · · focus · HN ↗
apart from the parent analogy, their two points seem to be "leaders must seek out the right experts", and "we're discussing a movie", both points are banal.
      4. Thanemate · · focus · HN ↗
A parent doesn't necessarily knows best or acts with your best interests in mind, and that's really observable by all the toxic parents regardless of whether there's malicious intentions behind their actions or just sheer incompetence.

I'm too European for the rest of your argument and I just happen to be Greek so I fundamentally disagree with the premise that I'm voting a father or mother figure which I must blindly follow out of obligation or blind trust.

        1. lolakutty · · focus · HN ↗
          >A parent doesn't necessarily knows best or acts with your best interests in mind..

A parent who does not have the best interest of their offspring is a fool..Now the "knowing best" part. I have a news for you. No one does, unless they have access to a crystal ball that shows them the future..

          > toxic parent

As soon as I see the word "toxic" in a comment, I lose all respect for the comment.

          > I'm voting a father or mother figure which I must blindly follow out of obligation or blind trust...

No one is saying you should trust them. What my comment is saying is that you cannot declare how much a person care by looking at external behavior. Even if one put a gun to someone's head and blow their brains out, if you had more context, it might turn out to be in their best interests. (Reference: ending of the movie Mist)...

&gt; How did they get into the dataset???

These were chosen manually, by committee. It&#x27;s as natural as bootstrap.

        I love the &quot;dataset&quot; guys. &quot;The reason there are so many em-dashes is because they were trained on the work of great writers, and people frequently used em-dashes before AI. I certainly did!&quot;

        1) You didn&#x27;t.*

        2) So explain all of the sections starting with emojis. Did all of the great writers have a section called &quot; The meat of the issue&quot; with an emoji of meat? Why did they go away? Are you starting to suspect that this doesn&#x27;t work like you think it does?

        -----

[*] And some of them just started so they could hide LLM output in their newfound style or explain previous LLM copy-pastes that they were passing off as their own. Others started because they just discovered em-dashes from LLM output and decided they liked them; and still others because they worship the LLM, think that it abstracts the excellent writing styles of the great masters, and they want to be seen as a great master — by imitating the prodded and formatted probability distributions of a machine.

~250k requests and a brief stint at #1 later, and I&#x27;m amazed that my 2 RTX-4060ti&#x27;s haven&#x27;t collapsed under the load. The model is an abliterated version of Qwen3.6 35B running on my PC. (qwen3.6-35b-a3b-uncensored-hauhaucs-aggressive)

So anyway, it&#x27;s just a fun satirical sort of protest directed at the absurdity of it all. No attempts to monetize have been made or will be made. I have to whole heartedly endorse vibecoding hammered. It pushes the Balmer Peak deep into blackout drunk territory with pretty amusing results.

This is what I love about the agentic era the most. It gives us highly functioning alcoholics the ability to drink and work at the same time! -thisisajokeorisit-

Not really, the Ballmer Peak always existed, agents just shift the curve upwards up by a few standard deviations.

I’ve been wondering recently if it’s time for someone to revisit this study to see how it holds up with agents <a href="https:&#x2F;&#x2F;arxiv.org&#x2F;abs&#x2F;2404.10002" rel="nofollow">https:&#x2F;&#x2F;arxiv.org&#x2F;abs&#x2F;2404.10002 to nail downa

    7. Alive-in-2025 · · focus · HN ↗
Maybe I should have sent you a Guinness last night after I saw the website.

Ooh, instead I should vibe code a website and service that will send a Guinness to a hacker who is working on their own vibe coded service, kind of a perfect recursive circle! &quot;Godel, Escher, Guinness, an External Dark River of Achievement&quot;.

Immediately I heard a knock on my door from the dark forces of Alcohol Beverage Enforcement, they were trying to get in, along with my HR team, my lawyer, and weirdly my ex-wife were all here to tell me this was a bad idea.

As a side note, that particular model is extremely abliterated, although it&#x27;s almost certainly wrong, it&#x27;ll attempt to give you an entire setup plan for a meth lab if you ask it. Or something similarly naughty as a test.

I’m kinda surprised we are not mandated to call it America Intelligence. The initials would still be AI!

I’m personally still bummed basilisk.ai was taken. Looked for it as soon as I heard about that silly thing. Was going to make a Geocities style “shrine to Roko’s Basilisk.”

Would love to know what prompts you used for this. Anytime I&#x27;ve ever tried to make an LLM create funny but satirical jokes it fails terribly and comes across cringey and try-hard. This one genuinely seems funny and absurd.
