   it really hurts me heart. I love programming, I feel like myself when I write code. wrestling with a problem until I understand every nuance and how to defeat it is the clearest most unalloyed joy I feel.

      nothing is stopping you from doing that though. in fact you should continue to do it! but not everything is worth wrestling with all of the time..

         In many jobs right now there absolutely is something stopping people doing this: managers.
