I'm wondering what's the situation like in EU. Seems like, under GDPR, I should be able to not consent to tracking and still have the connected functionality remain working. I haven't had the experience of setting up any new cars in EU, does anyone know whether you're provided with an explicit choice regarding data collection? Whether it's then honored might be a different question though.

I decided I had enough of all the software in my car (after the very modern Mercedes C class I had tried killing me, twice) and got an oldie instead, had it rebuilt at a total price of ~1/2 of what a new one would have been. It's almost 30 years old but a great daily driver and besides the ECU there isn't really anything that is connected. Behind the factory bezel there was a double DIN frame so replacing the head unit with something more modern was pretty easy (though some of the wiring was pretty hard).
