Google breaks promise to provide 10 years of updates to Chromebooks

    A maybe not-so-silver lining is that the major consumers of Chromebooks (schools, mostly) probably won't see their hardware survive that long.

        I'm on the school board for our school, and they last a few years if we're lucky. There are some that survive up to maybe 7, but they accrete so much damage by then. While I think it would have been ideal for G to keep it 10 years, I think in practice it won't matter for many people. Most students are awfully hard on those things after all.

        I work in e-waste recycling. I've seen hundreds, maybe thousands of Chromebooks come in from schools. They are five years old maximum, and most are in pretty bad shape.
