If only we'd all made do with 640k!

      This but unironically.

This is why I (actually/literally) just purchased a Commodore 64; I miss the days of crazy optimization and hardware hacking to fit so much into so little :).

        Do you run LLMs locally?

I do not, no; can you give me some context for the question? :)

I was joking. Running an LLM on the C64. Loading it from the tape drive! I never had to and didn't feel like I'd missed anything by not participating in the 20 minute load by tape.

As a 6 year old it taught both patience and troubleshooting, which is what want to help instill in my 7 year old son - plus the notion that you can truly own, understand, and hack your device, which sadly is gone from vast majority of tablets and phones and tvs and computers and even washing machines.

But agreed that as an adult with kids and job and family etc the wait is not ideal. Luckily, even in the 80s much c64 software was available on cartridges, and today there are even faster FPGA solutions :).

One thing is certain: in that world, we would not have to brace for a future where pretty much any form of human labor is at risk of getting replaced by just having the machines oxidize even more carbon and telling those humans to just eat cake if they fail to sell any their skills for bread.
