I never understood the argument of "fashion over function" with regard to pockets on women's clothes. Among other things (protecting from elements and so on), aethetics is also a function of clothing.
I don't have pockets on most of my dresses (or I have tiny pockets on jeans, pants, etc) not because there are no dresses with pockets (there are a lot and I do own some of those) but because they're often ugly and and I don't want to wear ugly clothes. Pockets distort the silhuette and don't hold shape well with ton of materials such as silk or thin cotton.
