On top of all this, electricians don't spend much time doing actual electrical work. Time is spent driving a van, doing metal work, cutting, drilling, crawling around tight spaces etc.
In Canada the official electrician trade name is actually 'Construction Electrician' which to me is much more descriptive of the work. Electricians typically need to know a little bit about framing, drywall, hvac, plumbing, etc so that they can confidently cut into walls and modify things.
I'm an electrician in Canada and my favourite part of the job is actually this construction type work. I probably should have just been a carpenter but the job prospects aren't nearly as strong.
