Have any of these articles actually addressed HOW software developers are supposed to retrain for good jobs? Personally I have neither the money nor the years to go back to college to get a livable job.

I know some people whose work was already almost completely eliminated by AI (language translation) and they're not doing great. Reality is there's no-one out there looking out for you except yourself and very close family/friends.

I know a language translator (Japanese/English) who is doing very well out of AI screwing up and causing damage.

This might be the savior for software developers

kinda. there'd still be a lot less demand for software devs than there used to be, a lot of people would still be jobless/would have to pivot to some other career.

It could. But I'm not confident there will be a broad recognition of the fact if things become much worse than they are, or of the cause, or that there will be a desire to make things be better. There has been a long decline in quality in favor of optimizing for monetization and engagement, predating LLMs. But I do think there will be some pullback in things that actually matter if not in the SaaS FOTM.

Oh yes, when LLMs fail at translating they don't make a visible error. They fill up with inferred meaning. Translators can only be replaced by LLMs if there's no consequence attached to the meaning of what's being translated.
