Requiring proficiency in the language is reasonable, but requiring everyone to be richer than the average member of the population and have enough money banked to live off of for 30 years seems insane. That goes well beyond simply making sure that people are able to care for themselves.

I think the argument is that the requirements should be stricter than "able to care for themselves".

From the article: In an announcement detailing the changes, Japan’s Immigration Services Agency stressed the need for foreigners to “live independently” and have “a stable life without the risk of becoming a burden”.

Their new requirements far exceed what is needed to meet that stated goal

            > They simply want less foreigners

How is that "between the lines"? Yes, that is the goal. If your argument is that it's just because of simple racism or something, then make that argument.

Ironically you have also failed to read between the lines of my comment.

You should explain, rather than being ominous/snarky. This doesn't belong on HN.

There really needs to be a term like "racism" without the negative connotations that it now carries. Yes, in the strictest sense, Japanese people wanting fewer foreigners in their territory is "racist", but it's not racist.

It’s xenophobia. Doesn’t smell much better.

That's just the word we use for racism when the "other" isn't primarily a visually distinct race.

There's nothing wrong with the words. People with those beliefs just don't like their opinions accurately described lol. Hit dogs holler and all that.

I've heard "culturalism". It's devastating that this game even needs to be played.
