"Focus follows mouse" is what I use to keep the file manager from popping up when click-dragging files.

I've decided to be frozen in time with MATE (basically gnome 2). I have problems with it, but I've realized I don't want to be hit with surprise! on upgrades.
Yes but also no. You don’t get to demand modernisation while also poo-pooing a whole discipline of research (UX) and one very important tenant of the book of UX practices is not confuse the hell out of your users with toggles and options and dropdowns for every single visual aid.
I agree that we ought to have more control. But not every control. GUIs SHOULD be opinionated.
