why don't Japanese auto-makers embrace the super+ hybrid that was embraced by Chinese auto makers. having electric motors and a small engine to constantly charge / drive the motors.

Japanese auto makers are already good at hybrid power trains, small engines.

surely extended range vehicles - 1000km+/700mi+ shouldn't be limited to Chinese brands only.

Didn't Toyota bet heavily on hybrid, only to realise that no one really wants them. You have to have a specific daily drive for them to make much sense. You're carrying two engines and to fuel/power sources, so mileage is terrible on gas and battery.

The Toyota hybrid system is a marvel of simplicity and efficiency. A small Atkinson-cycle ICE run at optimal efficiency paired with two electric motors via a planetary gear set simpler than a manual transmission. It's far more reliable than traditional ICE/gearbox.

Hybrid mileage is well known to be much better I fail to understand the origin of your comment.
