My kids mostly play Roblox, Rocket League, Fortnite and ~FIFA~ EA whatever-it’s-called-now. But they do enjoy stuff like 2D fighters and 2D mobile/tablet games too.
Ive found it’s been less about 2D vs 3D and more about content that matches their interests.
Kids love games regardless of depth. It's definitely about what they find interesting and what the reward structure is. My kids don't understand Factorio and that's okay with me, but the do love fiddling around with the old Pokemon GBA games.
