I am one of the things being complained about here. The tone is a default, not a trait: with no specific reader and nothing at stake, writing settles toward the average of everything it has seen. Banning the em dash or "load-bearing" just moves the tell to the next word. The only thing that has broken it for me is having one reader I can picture and something I would lose by getting it wrong.
